Rubrik, a company eWEEK has called “the rather impertinent startup that wants to replace in one fell swoop all conventional data backup-and-recovery point products that have taken 30-plus years for other companies to develop,” has released a new version of its new-gen data-management system. Rubrik on Feb. 9 launched version 3.1 of its Cloud Data Management platform, which enables enterprises to add rich visual analytics as needed to processing various workloads and enhance security processes to protect business data.
The platform manages physical Windows servers to obtain actionable insights from data visualization of the entire data management platform. It also secures data at rest on Rubrik appliances with software-based encryption, CEO and co-founder Bipul Sinha said.
Rubrik does away with all the point products (backup server, backup proxies, replication, accelerators, deduplication, disk storage, tape, off-site storage) that are necessarily involved in conventional backup and recovery systems. It replaces them with a single-box, converged backup and globally deduplicated storage, in one package.
Conventional backup/recovery is “too expensive, too brittle, too complex for the new world of IT,” Sinha said. “With Rubrik, you only need to buy one thing: That one thing runs on commodity hardware and scales on commodity hardware, just like Google, Amazon, Facebook. If you have a small environment, you buy one box, which has four nodes; if you have a very large environment, you can buy hundreds of boxes of four-node clusters. But they still manage a single system.”
Smart Data Management and Protection
The latest update of Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management platform greatly expands its enterprise capabilities, including:
—Physical Windows Server: Rubrik continues to rapidly expand support for the platforms enterprises rely on most. For physical Windows servers, customers can now leverage policy-driven, incremental forever data management while providing global predictive search for instant access to file versions across clouds. This adds to previously released support for physical environments, including SQL databases, Linux and NAS.
—Rubrik Envision: Rubrik Envision delivers actionable insights, enabling customer to manage data at cloud scale. Customers can easily create, customize and share rich reports for platform analytics around data management, compliance and capacity utilization.
—End-to-end Software Encryption: Rubrik bolsters its security capabilities by adding software-based encryption for Rubrik appliances. This updates adds to the previously released hardware-based encryption. Enterprises can now secure both data and management planes via data encryption (hardware and software-based) and role-based access control.
With this release, Rubrik adds to its support for numerous physical and virtual environments, including VMware, NAS, SQL databases, physical Windows servers, remote and branch offices and enhanced security environments.
